The Game

Lex Ferrum is a multiplayer action game for the Nokia N-Gage, based on players’ real location. Lex Ferrum will highlight the features of the N-Gage to attendees of the Nokia Conference 2003 in Portugal.

The game starts in the middle of a fierce battle between Moorish, Nordic and Iberian warriors for the control of Akion, a sacred kingdom taken by evil spirits. Players pick a side and get right into the action, fighting nearby enemy warriors and deadly spirits. Proximity between players is detected using the Bluetooth wireless communication protocol, one of the many native features of the N-Gage. Warriors can fight using axes, swords, scimitars and magic spells, which are bought from real-world resource bases – decorated sets representing armories and altars, placed around the Nokia Conference area. When a player arrives at one of the sets, the game seamlessly activates the corresponding scenario on the screen. Players can also go to potion-healers and buy rare elixirs which recover health during combat. Every soul is at stake: dead characters become ghouls and must take the vital energy of a living enemy to come back to life. In the end, one name will be remembered: the bravest warrior alive will be declared heir to the throne of Akion, leader of his people.

The unusual blending of physical and virtual scenarios with proximity-based, multiplayer hack’n slash action provided Nokia Conference attendees with a vivid experience of the innovations in gameplay made possible by the N-Gage.
